SABRASKI MAKES LATE PASS TO WIN ADVANTAGE RV’S MODIFIEDS AT GRANITE CITY SPEEDWAY

By Dean Reller
SAUK RAPIDS, MN (June 2, 2017) – Shane Sabraski put on a show as he came out ahead of Dave Cain in the battle for the win in the Advantage RV’s Modified Tour 40 lap Feature at Granite City Speedway.

Kevin Eder led the field to the green, but it was Cain who quickly took over out front. Denis Czech moved into second as Sabraski followed behind in third. Czech and Sabraski would fight hard for second, allowing Cain to build a sizeable lead before a caution around the half-way mark brought the field together. On the restart, Cain picked up where he left off as Sabraski finally got past Czech and then set his sights on Cain. The front pair would try different lines as they tried to out maneuver each other, while slowly pulling away from the rest of the pack. With five laps remaining, they made hard contact with each other, but neither missed a beat as the race continued. Then, with two laps to go, Sabraski finally made the pass to take the lead. Cain would hang close, but run out of time to challenge as Sabraski took the win. “I didn’t know if I’d ever get there tonight,” said an exhausted Sabraski following the race. “The car started coming around to me and it was getting faster and faster. Me and Dave Cain had a blast tonight swapping lines. We definitely had to work for it tonight, but it was a lot of fun.”

Tim Johnson runs in up to three classes of cars on any given night, but in the WISSOTA Super Stock Feature he was the car to beat. Levi Voss took the lead from the start, but Johnson quickly shot into contention as he took possession of the top spot on lap two. Voss would have a couple of spins, prompting cautions which ended his night early. Meanwhile, Johnson had to hold off Dave Mass as he tried to snare the win. Johnson was unstoppable as he rolled on to the win ahead of Mass and Dexton Koch.

Dean Larson took celebration to a new level after he won the WISSOTA Mod 4 Feature. Adam Prieve appeared to have the win in hand, but a late caution bunched the field and that played into Larson’s favor. With two laps to go, Larson powered by Prieve in turn four and hung on to take the win. Afterwards, Larson got out of his car in Victory Lane and ran through the infield to the fence on the front stretch, where he climbed up and saluted the fans.

He’s only two years from being able to legally drive on the road, but 14-year-old Corey Mehrwerth backed up his first career win with another in the WISSOTA Hornet Feature. Kyle House led the early going, but with five laps left, his car gave way and he was forced to drop from the race. Mehrwerth scooped up the lead and never looked back. Just behind him, Joe Martin and Erik Cleasby fought it out for second. As Mehrwerth notched win number two, Cleasby was able to beat Martin to the line for second.

Kyle Thell was a familiar face in Victory Lane when he raced Mod 4’s, but as he’s moved up to the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds he’s quickly becoming a regular winner there as well as he scored his second straight feature win. Thell slipped by Travis Schulte with two laps remaining to grab the win. “The track was really good,” said Thell following the race on a hot sticky night. “Last week it was a little more hammer down. This week, it was pretty dry through the middle. I found a little bit on the top in one and two, which got me the win.”

Coming up next week, it’s Kids Bike Giveaway night at Granite City Speedway. A full program of WISSOTA racing will be on tap including: Modifieds, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, Street Stocks, Mod 4’s, Hornets and Outlaw Mini Mods. Gates open at 6 PM, with racing starting at 7:30 PM. For more information go to www.gcspeedway.com
